Are You Being Misled? Alarming Trend on Dog Food Websites

It was not long into my research that I began to notice an alarming trend:

Some of the large online pet food stores are withholding the most essential nutritional information on dog food labels. In particular, The Guaranteed Analysis.

The Guaranteed Analysis and Ingredients panels are where you, the consumer, can see what you are really buying. Dog food makers are legally bound to display accurate information in both panels, but this regulation isn’t always observed.

Ingredients– Chicken Meal, Pork Meal, Oatmeal, Dehulled Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Peas, Rice, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Brewers Dried Yeast, Flaxseed, Tomato Pomace.

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS

At this point, you might assume there is no difference between the two. WRONG!

That’s what some dog food makers want you to think.

But here’s how you can avoid that misleading trap …

When compared, the Guaranteed Analysis of Product A – vs – Product B, reveals:

• Product A’s protein level is 25% and product B’s protein level at 27%.
• So 100 grams of product A will have 25g of protein and Product B will have 2 grams more, which actually translates to 2/25 which is 8% more protein.
• When comparing fat levels, 100 grams of each product will show 2 grams more fat for Product B and that translates to 16.7% more fats, which for dogs is actually healthier.

The lesson here? Pay close attention to the details on the Guaranteed Analysis panel.

The 3 nutrition-critical metrics to look for when buying dog food online are high level percentages for:

• Protein
• Fat
• Omega 3 & 6
